Dimmable Lighting Types

Bedroom lighting with a dimmer needs to have a special switch, something like a slider or a dial that gives you precise control over the light intensity. Aside from the dimmer switch, which is a special component that you can find in these types of lights, it is also important what bulbs are connected to the light.

Incandescent

Incandescent light bulbs are made from glass bulbs that house the wire filament, which is mostly tungsten. When the wire heats up (because electricity runs through it, it starts to change its color and gives out energy in the form of light. Even if this type of light is basic and cheap, it is also less efficient compared to others.

More modern incandescent lights use xenon or halogen which helps replace the gas found in the bulbs with the purpose of increasing the lifespan of the bulbs.

Because they are basic, incandescent bulbs are also the easier one to dim. With a suitable dimmer switch, you can control the power supply that fuels the filament of the bulbs. Basic sliders and rotary dimmers are usually the way to go. Some lights have transformers that need an MLV or ELV dimmer.

Fluorescent

Fluorescent bulbs do not have a physical filament, but instead, they use mercury vapor  inside the bulbs (which are typically of a tubular shape). When the bulb is supplied with electrical current, the vapor starts emitting ultraviolet light. The tube inside will respond to this ultraviolet light because it is made with a phosphorus coating, resulting in the light that you see.

Fluorescent lights generally require less power to run, which makes them more efficient. However, they are also more pretentious and require metering out to make sure that the lamp doesn't buzz or pulse. The sad news is the fluorescent lights are typically not dimmable because the dimmer-compatible ballasts are costly. Those that are, typically require a 0-10 volts dimming system.

Compact fluorescent

These bulbs have small fluorescent tubes that are curled in on themselves. Because of their initial construction, these bulbs presented a number of different problems, such as issues with color rendering and color temperature. For the most part, these bulbs are dimmable but you should check the exact specifications of the bulbs to see if that's the case.

Normal & Integrated LEDs

As some of you may already know, LEDs are now the most efficient types of light bulbs out there. They use a semiconductor that causes interactions between the electrons to generate light. These LEDs have a phosphor coating so that users can enjoy lights in color ranges familiar to them.

Integrated LEDs are attached to a panel that uses a heat sink to prevent the lighting fixture from overheating (although, it is important to mention that LEDs don't produce the same amount of heat as other types of bulbs do). Attaching a dimming switch to a LED light will depend on the module used.

Best Dimmable Lights for Bedrooms

Now that you know about the main types of bulbs that can be dimmed and what are some of the requirements to do so, we wanted to show you some lights that already come with this dimmable feature included in the product. Since not everyone is looking to mess around with wiring to attach switches to existing setups, let's see some product examples that can be dimmed without the extra hassle.

Brightech Sky Lamp

Specs:

  • Color options: 7
  • Type of bulb: LED
  • Dimensions: 10 x 10 x 63 inches

Best floor lamp

The first item on today's list is a very stylish floor lamp with a futuristic look and available at a good price. It packs 2190 lumens which should be able to cover the needs of an average bedroom. It is equipped with LED bulbs that promise to last an average of 20 years, which is pretty good considering the decent level of brightness that you can get from this lamp.

Because of its pivoting design, this floor lamp can be moved so that the light shines in any direction, meaning that you won't actually have to move it when you're, let's say, reading a book in bed. The three-way built-in dimmer can remember the last brightness setting.

Pros:

  • Long LED lifespan.
  • Rotating light.
  • 7 color options.
  • Compatible with wall switches.
  • Memorizes brightness settings.

Cons:

  • Is a little short.

Who Should Buy This?

The Sky lamp is the perfect addition to any bedroom where a floor lamp can find its space, being a great light source for people who like to read in bed or just want a modern-looking lamp to complement their decor.

  • Type of bulb: LED
  • Dimensions: 17.5 x 10.1 x 5.2 inches

Editor's choice

While we were super impressed with the Sky lamp, we eventually came across this Miroco gem, which is another dimmable bedroom light that we feel is worthy of our attention. Also designed to be a floor lamp, this comes with a 12 watts LED that has an 1815 lumens output. It has three different lighting modes (warm white, natural white, and cool white), which is a really awesome feature to have.

Since the body of the lamp is adjustable in height, it serves as both a floor lamp and a desk lamp, if you collapse it. There are five different brightness levels to choose from, making the lamp good for reading, but also for moments when you just want to enjoy some relaxation time with diffuse bedroom lighting. Oh, did we mention that it also has a 1-hour timer?

Pros:

  • Integrated timer.
  • 3 color output modes.
  • 5 brightness levels.
  • Bendable neck.
  • Adjustable height.

Cons:

  • Thin wire.

Who Should Buy This?

AUKEY Table Lamp

Best for nightstands

Have you ever wanted a nice-looking bedside lamp that fits your nightstand and can give out some diffuse lighting to create that sense of wonder and relaxation that we all crave for in the bedroom? The Aukey lamp might be the right product for you. This is a touch-activated lamp that emits a diffuse light, creating a cozy bedroom ambiance. For some, it's just enough for reading, while others prefer more bright light.

What's truly interesting about this lamp is not the fact that it's dimmable, nor the fact that you can turn it on by touching the sensitive base, but the fact that the light changes colors. Even when none of the colors are activated, you can choose between three brightness levels, ranging from soft to bright (fair warning, bright isn't bright-bright, it's just ok-bright).

Pros:

  • Cycling colors.
  • 3 brightness levels.
  • Touch activated.
  • 360 degrees touch sensitivity.

Cons:

  • Touch sensor is a little too sensitive.

Who Should Buy This?

  • Dimensions: 12.4 x 8.8 x 7.4 inches

Best bedroom sconce

Sconces are very stylish wall lamps that are available in a multitude of shapes and with more or fewer decoration elements, depending on how extravagant you want them to look. If you're after a modern wall sconce with a steampunk type of design, we might have found something suitable to your liking.

This sconce is available as a single product, or in a pack of two, which we recommend purchasing because adding one to each side of the bed makes for some beautiful symmetry. The on/off switch allows you to rotate it in order to get the perfect brightness level each time. The best part is that the fixtures can either be connected to the electrical wires AND they also have a power cord that allows you to plug them in if you don't want to mess with any wiring.

Pros:

  • Multiple light bulb compatibility.
  • Adjustable arm.
  • Two installation methods.
  • Available in a pack of 2.

Cons:

  • Doesn't work well with dimmable LEDs.

Light Blue USA LB72119 Light

Specs:

  • Color options: 1
  • Type of bulb: LED
  • Dimensions: 12 x 1 x 3 inches

Best ceiling fixture

A ceiling light had to find its way into our list because it's the most traditional way to light up a bedroom. However, this particular fixture is a little bit different compared to a regular one because the lights can be dimmed. First thing's first, we have to tell you that you have the option of choosing between a soft white and a cool white version, but also a 5000K daylight, as the company calls it.

There are multiple size options as well, and you can choose between a round or an oval fixture. The light comes with an integrated strip of tiny LED lights that are connected to your home's wiring, which means that you'll have to hire an electrician if you're not comfortable or good enough to install it without getting hurt.

Pros:

  • Multiple lighting options.
  • Energy Star rated.
  • ETL certified.
  • Multiple size options.

Cons:

  • Complaints about flickering.

Who Should Buy This?

This Light Blue USA fixture is a good purchase for those looking for a traditional ceiling-mounted light, but also for those who want a more powerful light source that can actually illuminate the entire bedroom.

Bottom Line

The type of bedroom light that you should buy really depends on what you like in terms of aspects, and what interests you in terms of functionality. Dimmer lights that are suitable for bedroom use come in a variety of styles, ranging from ceiling fixtures to nightstand lamps. Some excel in brightness options, while others offer less light even when the dimmer switch is turned to the maximum.

Naturally, the type of bulb found into a light will completely change the light output, but also the power consumption. If you're looking for something more portable, a bedside or a floor lamp is certainly the way to go, while some of you might prefer a fixture like a sconce or a ceiling light.
